Glick & Fiske (1996): The Ambivalent Sexism Inventory

남성의 여성에 대해 형성하는 이중적인 태도를 측정할 수 있는 척도를 개발하면서 이런저런 결과들을 담은 논문.

남성이 갖는 여성에 대한 양가감정은 범문화적으로 관찰된다고 한다.

그래도 이런 연구를 하고 사회적으로 이슈화되는건 최소한 미국 사회는 인사이트는 있는 것 같음(실제로 그것이 잘 실천되는지의 여부와는 별개로).

며칠전 후배와도 얘기를 나눴지만, 한 저명한 사회심리 교수의 말에 따르면 미국인들이 인종차별주의자로 보이는 것에 대한 공포가 있다고 한다. (물론 교육수준이나 사회적 지위에 따라 다르겠지만)

그거야 social desirability와 강한 관련성이 있겠지. 이 논문에서도 그런 가능성을 보였지만.

아래는 논문 중 발췌한 부분인데, 이상하게 여성에 대해 과도하게 외현적으로 긍정적인 태도를 보이는 사람들에 대해 심한 거부감을 느끼게 되는 이유를 설명하는 부분인듯.

..., a person who is firmly against equal rights for women because he or she embraces traditional beliefs about gender roles may indeed have a very positive attitude toward women and positive, although stereotypic, images of women (Eagly & Mladinic, 1989).

Compared to men who are nonsexists, ambivalent sexist men are those who are likely to be patronizingly sweet or viciously hostile toward any particular woman at an given time; these men may exhibit volatile swings between these two poles, depending on the characteristics of the situation or of the women with whom they are interacting. ...
